Not All Garden Materials Age the Same Way

Not all garden materials age the same way. And how materials age is one of the most important — and most overlooked — decisions in garden design.

Here's what we've seen over 50 years in Surrey:

Natural stone — Gets better with time. Develops patina and character. Higher upfront cost, lowest lifetime cost. Lasts generations with minimal maintenance.

Porcelain paving — Very low maintenance, consistent appearance, effectively frost-proof. Over 30 years, total cost of ownership can be lower than sandstone because it doesn't need regular sealing.

Composite decking — Costs roughly double softwood upfront but needs only occasional cleaning. One analysis put the 25-year maintenance cost at ~£414 versus over £2,300 for softwood.

Softwood timber — Most affordable to install. But it needs annual sanding, staining and sealing, and you're looking at 5–15 years before replacement. The cheapest to buy is rarely the cheapest to own.

The pattern is consistent: spending more upfront almost always saves money over 10–20 years. The cheapest quote often includes the cheapest materials — and you notice the difference quickly.

We won't use materials we don't believe will last. That's not stubbornness — it's 50 years of seeing what happens when corners get cut.
