The Study That Changed How We Think About Gardens

In 1984, a researcher called Roger Ulrich published a study that changed how we think about green spaces and health.

He tracked hospital patients recovering from surgery. Some had a window view of trees. Others faced a brick wall. Same hospital, same procedures, same care.

The patients with the tree view needed fewer strong painkillers during recovery. They received fewer negative notes from nurses. They went home slightly sooner — roughly three-quarters of a day earlier on average.

It was a small study — 23 matched pairs — and Ulrich himself cautioned against overinterpreting it. But the core finding has been supported by decades of subsequent research. Views of natural elements measurably affect stress and recovery.

We've been designing and building gardens across Surrey for over 50 years. We've always known that a good garden changes how people feel. Now the science is catching up with what gardeners have understood for generations.

Your outdoor space is already affecting your health. The question is whether it's been designed to do it well.
