What we're seeing in Surrey gardens right now.
After 50 years of working across this county, we've learned to read the signs. February is the watching month. The garden is making decisions underneath while we're still in coats.
Here's what's happening:
Soil temperature is creeping up — not enough for planting yet, but enough to trigger root activity. The garden is waking up underground before you see anything above.
Early bulbs are pushing through — crocuses, snowdrops nearly done, first daffodil shoots. Tulips planted in autumn showing green tips.
Camellias are colouring up — especially in sheltered spots. Surrey's acid-soil pockets around Chobham and the heathlands are perfect for them.
Birds are building — noticeably more activity. If you haven't cleaned out nest boxes, now's the time.
Moss is thriving — all that winter wet has given it a head start. On lawns, this tells you about drainage and compaction. Don't just treat the moss — understand why it's winning.
This is the watching stage. The garden is telling you what it needs if you pay attention. Waterlogged areas show drainage problems. Bare patches show where structure is missing.
Don't rush it. The work starts in March. February is for observation.
